The Role of MC/Announcer
The role of the MC is to welcome and to provide
information about the event itself and follow-up to
it. The MC is not there to provide inspriational
content or to attempt to clarify, repstate,
interpret or add to M's message.
I. What is need:
A. Respect for the purpose of event and
the roles of the video and of the MC.
B. Being informed; know the video, the
audience, schedules and information.
C. Being comfortable in the role; confident
and neutral.
II. Personal Preparation:
A. Rehearse with a script until you are
familiar with the information.
B. Dress appropriately for the area, venue
and audience; be neat and clean.
C. Arrive early to check set-up, sound,
lights etc.
III. Personal Presentation:
A. Be relaxed and confident. (It's okay
to be a little nervous.)
B. Be patient. Pace yourself. Be aware of
translation.
C. Be concise and precise and speak
clearly.
IV. Things to avoid:
A. Repeating, clarifying, interpreting
or adding to M's messge.
B. Being a salesperson; coaching or
encouraaging anyone.
C. Soliciting and/or answering questions from
the audience.
D. Using example, stories, personal
statements, humor.
E. Overloading the audience with too much
information.
V. Opening: introducing the
presentation
A. Simple welcome: "welcome to
tonight's presentation"
B. Explain the nature of the event ("this
is an introduction...")
C. State the content of the event (4 basic
points):
number of videos(& guest speaker
if applicable);
nature of the videos (Q & A;
introductory excerpts);
approximate length of time of this
event;
announcements after the videos;
VI. Closing: providing follow-up
information
A. Provide general information:
if interested you are welcome to
come & hear more;
opportunities to listen include:
at video events in the area;
when M speaks in person at events;
through video and audio tapes;
B. Refer to specific information as
appropriate:
context of videos at next follow-up
events (M answers questions);
schedules;
follow-up events;
invitaions;
cards;
guest speakers;
tapes
C. Closing: "Thank you and good
night."
VII. Dealing with questions:
A. Do not directly answer questions
regarding M's message, such as, "What is
thirst?", "What does he mean by
Knowledge?". Direct them to continue to
listen to M.
B. Respond to questions regarding informatin
and schedules (be aware of any upcoming
instructor visits and events M is
attending).
